When we say Velociraptor almost everyone thinks about the intelligent dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, but that dinosaur actually never existed. The Velociraptor was a feathered, small dinosaur that only grew to about 2 meters and weighed approx. 15 kgs. The film makers wanted a really scary dinosaur for their movie and used Deinonychus as their inspiration, but they thought Deinonychus was too hard a name to pronounce, so they renamed their dinosaur to Velociraptor.
The Deinonychus was larger than the Velociraptor - around 3-5 meters and it, too, had feathers. They lived in what today is North America around 112 million years ago. The Velociraptor, on the other hand, lived around 70-75 million years ago in what is today Mongolia.
The dinosaur in the picture is, in other words, a beefed up, featherless version of a Deinonychus and a Hollywood creation, but that doesn't make it any less fun to play with. What they did have in common was their scary, sharp toe claws.
